dungen - ta det lugnt
don't know what I can say that hasn't been said. ass-to-ass awesome.
Au Pairs - Playing with a Different Sex
forgettable 80's semi political, semi tuneful, sharp guitars plodding bass. enough other bands in the same area with more waaaay happening (see mid-souixsie,kleenex, gang of four etc).

the doves - some cities
smokey but smart ready for radio pop rock. the sharper side of the jam meets coldplay. sometimes it reminds me of "the rat", but the production is way slicker, though (intentionally) rough.
"black and white town" - amazing. source of the jam comparisons

nagisa ni te - the same as a flower
"The same as flower" - imagine imperial era mark robinson jamming with the girl from deerhoof on some pacific island. I think mark might be playing guitar too (again, imperial era downtempo strummy stuff). oh yeah and nobody is speaking english.
"thread of souls" - moe tucker arrives on the island, with miss deerhoof
"river"- the team sings in a round, accompanied by slightly swooshy guitar
"a light" - childish and slow....
"wife (instumental)" - break out the strummy dulcimer and they wispy beatbox. more islandy slide guitar, but this one is a little more country.
"Bramble" - lives up to its sort of country name. just sort of plods along, but with a much thicker sound, drums piano synths horns etc.(hinted at in the same as flower), but this one is too damn long.
The first three songs are worth second listen, with "thread of souls" being my fave, though nothing here is really stellar.

minus story - the captain is dead, let the drum corpse dance
nice little experimental pop songs. lo fi on the production, but occasially seems sequenced. slightly emo style vox. sort like if achetecture in helsinki rocked it up a bit.
the middle of the album is alright.
"gravity pulls" - vox a little anooying but sounds great
"open your eyes" - kiddy sample and piano
"you were on my side" simple orgam
"joyless, joyless"- again the vox are a little to whiny

clogs - stick music
stick music lives(or at least wants to live) almost completely in the art music world. They quote a wide variety of 20th century composers/arrangers/experimenters[reich,schoenberg etc]. they lean towards but don't embrace the atonal and are happy to leave arrangements sparse and breathy. Often strings whine in and out over vague rhythms. plucky sounds could just as easily be gamelan/reich as a live rendition of early tape pieces. "pencil stick" is the only track that i'd be coming back for, though it appeals more directly to my sensibilities with it's cohesive rhythm and asian string melody.
three o'clock - sixteen tambourines
didn't really know what to expect with this.
I didn't expect it to sound so 80's or whatever with synths pads, sharp drums and (too)clean production. but it does have the faux brit accents and over the top pop. Nothing here that really blows my mind, but it's nice pop songs with the focus on the vox. sits in nicelywith mighty lemon drops or the candyskins. there really are a number of good songs but I'm not sure there are any real classix and the overall effect is somewhat mediocre. It's tough to listen to this much over the top peppy pop all in a row. i can imagine being really into it in high school!
"jet fighter" is the big rock opener
"and so we run"
"a day in erotica" has a nice chorus and "rio" style synth arrpegios.
"as real as real" is nice enough to mention
"around the world" ain't so bad either
"when i go wild", "marjorie tells me",”when the lightening starts”
all the songs are pretty ok....

martha & the muffins - metro music
didn't find much more than the songs i already knew, which are not bad. Like untravox minus drama plus silly. probably an awfuly description. maybe just saying that b/c of the sax or that sort of flat/dry production they share. anyways the keepers are:
"echo beach"
"paint by number heart"
"hide and seek"
