hackamore brick - one kiss leads to another
mids 70s organ pop-rock thing with southern & cali textures sometimes heading toward new york guitar like the feelies, but still feels like it would sit pretty well with the eagles or steve miller or something, even if there is that hint of hte velvets.
i like the upbeat pop organ of "i won't be around" and the feelies meets paul simon rocker "zip gun woman".

gris gris - for the season
an exceptional record that blends a retro hard psyche sound with somthing that recalls the spokier side of sonic youth both melodically in thier feedback jams. There are the kooky sound collage thingys ("The Nonstop Tape") and free-jazz freak outs ("Ecks Em Eye") but when they settle in to rock they produce immediate, churning songs that really stick with you. besides the wierd stuff the album is also broken up by a number of more middle of the road psyche pop ("Cuerpos Haran Amor Extrano","Big Engine Nazi Kid Daydream","Medication #4","Skin Mass Cat","Mademoiselle of the Morning") that occasionally turn on the rock ("Down With Jesus"). Those songs bubble and flow along (and oftern into one another) biding time until the real meat of the record: dense rockers "Year zero" and "Pick up your raygun". A really great end to end album with a lot of balance.

caribou - the milk of human kindness
more than a little disappointing after "up in flames", but there are a few inspired moments that resemble the unbelievable density of that record, which was probaby my fave from '04. In comparison TMOHK just feels simple and empty. May have something to do with only having 7 tracks over 2 minutes. Not into the hip-hop trax("Lord Leopard", the Shadow Style "Pelican narrows"), or the repetitive guitar numbers("Bees","Hello HammerHeads","Barnowl") which aren't bad but just seem to mosey on to nowhere. Then there are the smattering of shorties("subotnick","Hands first","drumheller", that seem a little less polished than those same sort of tracks on up in flames, but are kinda cool. My fave tracks are the recklessdrums+drone recipe of "Yeti" and "Brahminy Kite". "Brahminy Kite" hits the Silver Apples so hard i thought it was a cover. still not convinced it isn't.
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Starts out hard but gets a little soft on the flipside. When they balance the tight with the tuneful they are hard to beat. really a pretty hot listen start to finish.

va-sound-of-young-sweden-vol-3-2002
i was expecting fun and fuzzy pop. but this was pretty run of the mill.
not outstanding but kind of nice was the B&S style acoustic "dreamer" by chasing dorotea.
as is courduroy utd's "little elvis" which has a bit more off the fuz i was expecting. may be i would have dug this more if i hadn't removed all the songs i already had from the radio dept and the legends when i downloaded it!

the telescopes - self-titled (1994)
a very wishy-washy post manchester brit band. most of the time wallows in that low key groove territory that the Roses worked way better. They are better off with more energy, louder MBV guitars and tighter harmonies like on "High on Fire", "Flying"(7) "Please Tell Mother" (10), but even that is sort of samey.

antena - camino del sol
drawing from french pop and and that kooky side of new wave that includes tom-tom club and family fodder, anteanna creates wierd little bossanova songs that i really don't know what to make of. There are echos of later bands throughout. "Camino del sol" seems like formative stereolab, while "Silly Things seem like a ton of chill twee-pop (late teenbeat or sarah records) that was to follow.
Minus a couple of wince moments, the album is a good overall listen, but a few trax standout.
"The Boy from Impanema"
"camino del Sol"

the aerovons - resurrection
beatles beatles and more beatles. all mid to late beatles style are given equal treatment. succesful but a total cop.
"world of you" is the most successuful and original, taking a darker piano/orchestral path.

more rare bubblegum 5
a random collection of late 60s early 70s pop ranging from r&b to sunny pop all clocking in at less than 3 minutes. no trax to worth coming back for.
